Basil Calling all cooks! Want a double whammy when it comes to mosquito protection? Plant some basil! Not only will you have a quick and easy mosquito repellent, you will also have a delicious fresh herb on hand to add to all of your favorite recipes! There are many different varieties of basil around, so feel free to experiment and find the ones that you like best. Many expert gardeners recommend trying lemon basil or cinnamon basil to deter insects. Plus basil is one of the easiest herbs to keep alive – even the biggest novice can manage it! 6. Lavender You probably know that lavender is a gorgeous purple flowering plant with a soothing, calming scent. But, did you know that it is also a natural mosquito repellent? Grow it indoors near a sunny window, or outside in your garden or flower bed to keep the bugs away. While you’re at it, make a delicious herbal tea, or use lavender to fill your home with a wonderful calming aroma. There are so many reasons to grow lavender. 7. Pennyroyal The adorable pennyroyal flower is a natural deterrent for mosquitoes! Make sure to plant some around your flowerbeds. This was a perfect example of me not too long ago. I was hyper-focused on my business… a successful business at that, but I was afraid to step away or divert in any way towards anything else. Do you see the pattern here? As top performers we have a tendency to be one-track minded and it allows us to miss out on some of the best things in life. It wasn’t until my wife was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease and my father diagnosed with cancer that things became clear. I had the hard-wiring to be awesome at both physical performance and business… In fact, they could compliment each other. I became obsessed with honing in on exactly what made me an excellent business person. I investigated and researched until it all made sense. The same exact patterns that made me a great businessperson were the same patterns that made me a great athlete. So I jumped on in; I applied discipline and knowledge to my health and made some promises to myself (and of course some solid Goals and KPIs). In a rather short amount of time, I went from being 280lbs to 185lbs and on the covers of some of the largest health and fitness magazines in the world. Now, I write for some of the largest fitness publications in the world as an expert in diet, nutrition, and mindset. Muscle-and-Performance-Multiple-Covers The magazine covers were great; they were a great ‘reward’ for my hard work, but what was even more rewarding was the fact that my new ability to see optimization in all realms of my life allowed me to close to double my yearly revenue and ultimately give me the confidence and the energy to sell a portion of my company to one of the largest private equity groups in the world. I had done the “impossible,” and not only succeeded on a business level, but got in amazing shape; and not just amazing shape but magazine cover shape… Oh yeah, all of this while maintaining a healthy marriage, with a woman I have been with for 12 years. The skills needed to optimize yourself are all within you, but they can only be tapped into with the right diet and the mental wherewithal. I became a coach after I knew that I could provide what was needed to get the world’s best business people the results that they need to be a better spouse, feel better, perform better, and increase their bottom line. Period. In this video I’m going to give you my three foods to avoid at all costs if you’re trying to have the energy to stay focused in the office, and in the gym. At the end, I’m going to give you a food that you can eat to help GET RID of the extra estrogen. When we have high levels of estrogen, it generally means that we have lower levels of testosterone and higher levels of what is called aromatase activity. This aromatase activity is the enzymatic conversion of androsterone and testosterone into estradiol, more commonly known as E2 or estrogen. For what it is worth, high levels of estrogen cause excess belly fat, increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol and also fatigue causing a serious lack of drive and motivation. Refined Sugar and Excess Carbohydrates The first food is simply refined sugar and excess carbohydrates. The simplest way to put it is that when you eat carbohydrates and spike your insulin, you lower an important hormone called Sex hormone binding globulin. This hormone is responsible for binding testosterone and estrogen and when the hormone is too low, it leaves you with too much estrogen floating around in the bloodstream. This leads to a myriad of effects. Replace the carbs with healthy fats to stimulate testosterone production rather than killing it off. Fat = Conversion to testosterone sugar = no binding and more estrogen! Non-organic Dairy Products The next food to avoid is non-organic dairy products. Now, I am not one that is against dairy, I think that it has it’s place in moderation. For the person that is trying to be as productive as possible, consuming too much dairy is flat out going to slow you down. Conventional milks and other dairy products have so much in the way of medications it wreaks havoc on the system. Research Bomb – In a study from the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Medicine and Engineering in Japan it was found that conventional milk contains large amounts of estrogen and progesterone and is shown to suppress gonadotropin, which suppresses testosterone. The solution is to opt for Organic Milk or even goat’s milk when given the opportunity. Soy The last food to avoid is one you’ve probably heard talks about… and that is SOY. Soy contains something called xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens mimic estrogen in the body, but aren’t real estrogen. This throws off your body and causes you to sometimes produce even more. This happens because we are not consuming true soy. So much of the soy that we eat is genetically modified that it doesn’t have the natural benefits of some of the other potentially healthy soy out there. I work with a lot of clients that are vegetarians and they need a solution for a vegetarian protein powder, in this case I recommend pea protein. Now lastly, as promised I want to give you a way that you can reduce estrogen in your body and help your body get rid of it easier… Cruciferous veggies – things like broccoli and cauliflower… Why? Because they have a component called indole-3-carbinole that is being shown time and time again to reduce levels of estrogen in the body. They also have levels of sulfur in them which detoxify the body quite well. Not only do you reduce serum levels of estrogen within the body, but you also help the body eliminate them easier. Since estrogen levels are actually highest at night and lower during the day, it’s most important to eat your big bowl of broccoli before bed. Hair loss is directly related to zinc insufficiency. Low iron levels or iron deficiency affects healing of wounds, dry skin, rashes, red spots, and dark bruises. If you eat a lot of eggs, you may experience problems with vitamin B7 levels, as protein in eggs inhibits this vitamin. Eat more brewer’s yeast, dried fruit, pumpkin seeds, whole grains, dairy products, avocados, button mushrooms, raspberries and bananas. 3. Red spots (acne) on your cheeks, arms and thighs Acne appear when your body lacks essential fatty acids, and vitamins A and D. These small spots resemble small sacks with sebum, and sometimes they are so painful that one can hardly resist the urge to extract them. Reduce the intake of saturated and trans-fats and eat more healthy fats. Eat fish, flax seeds, dried fruits, almonds and walnuts. Ask an Expert: Snakes out Earlier This Year - Eight Things You Should Know Snakes Out Earlier This YearUnseasonably warm temperatures this year have caused snakes to emerge early from hibernation. So be aware that just because you didn’t encounter a snake on your outdoor adventure last spring at this time doesn’t mean you won’t this spring. Utah is home to 31 species of snakes. Of these, only seven are venomous and are commonly called pit vipers because of the pit located between their nostrils and eyes. Most pit vipers found in Utah have tails with a series of rattles, hence the name rattlesnake. The venomous snake species in Utah includes the sidewinder, speckled rattlesnake, Mojave rattlesnake, Western rattlesnake, Hopi rattlesnake, midget-faded rattlesnake and the Great Basin rattlesnake. The most commonly encountered of these is the Western rattlesnake. Because most snakes in Utah are non-venomous, most human-snake encounters are generally not dangerous. However, if you encounter a venomous snake and are bitten, the consequences could be serious, so it is important to know the difference between venomous and non-venomous snakes. Consider this information. * If you encounter a snake, your best strategy is to leave it alone. Every year, hundreds of want-to-be herpetologists and snake charmers are bitten when they try to capture or kill a snake. Even dead snakes have been known to bite by reflex action. More than 7,000 venomous snakebites are reported every year in the United States. Of these, between nine and 15 are fatal. More than half of the reported bites were a result of someone trying to handle or kill the snake. It is always best to leave the area if you encounter a venomous snake. This will greatly reduce your risk of being bitten. * As a general rule, poisonous snakes have elliptical pupils and a single row of scales on the underside of the tail. Non-poisonous snakes have round pupils and two rows of scales on the underside of the tail. * When rattlesnakes are encountered or disturbed, the rapid vibration of their tails will make a characteristic rattling sound to warn the intruder of their presence. However, not all rattlesnakes will “rattle” when disturbed. For this reason, when you are in rattlesnake country, you must pay close attention to where you walk, sit and place your hands. Rattlesnakes can be found throughout Utah in sagebrush, pinyon-juniper woodlands, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, grasslands and mountain forests. They occur at elevations that range from sea level to timberline. * If you hear a rattlesnake “rattle,” stand still until you can locate where the sound is coming from. Do not try to jump or run. If you do, you may end up within the snake’s striking range. * Snakes are classified as non-game animals and are protected by Utah state laws. A person cannot collect or possess a live wild snake without receiving a Certificate of Registration from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. When there are human, domestic pet and livestock safety concerns, a venomous snake may be killed without a certificate. * Non-venomous snakebites are harmless. The only concern may be for potential infection. If bitten, clean and sterilize the wound much like you would a cut or abrasion. Bites from venomous snakes will almost instantly show signs of swelling and discoloration of the surrounding tissue. Other symptoms include a tingling sensation, nausea, rapid pulse, loss of muscle coordination and weakness. Also, bites from rattlesnakes will show two characteristic fang marks (punctures) as well as other teeth marks. * If someone has been bitten by a venomous snake, there are several things that should not be done. Do not allow the person to engage in physical activity such as walking or running. Carry the person if he or she needs to be moved. Do not apply a tourniquet to the area above the wound, and do not apply a cold compress to the bite area. Do not cut into the bite. Do not give the victim stimulants or pain medications unless instructed by a physician, and do not give the victim anything by mouth. Do not raise the bite area above the level of the heart, and do not try to suction the venom, as doing so may cause more harm than good. * All venomous snakebites should be considered life threatening. When someone has been bitten by a venomous snake, time is of the essence. If possible, call ahead to the emergency room so anti-venom can be ready when the victim arrives. Until then, keep the victim calm, restrict movement and keep the affected area below heart level to reduce the flow of venom. Wash the bite area with soap and water. Remove any rings or constricting items, as the affected area will swell. Cover the bite with clean, moist dressing to reduce swelling and discomfort. Monitor the victim’s vital signs (pulse, temperature, breathing, blood pressure). If there are signs of shock, lay the victim flat and cover with a warm blanket. Get medical help immediately. Bring the dead snake in for identification if this can be done without further risk of injury. RECOMMENDED: There is no official guideline as to how many eggs to eat, but a reasonable rule of thumb seems to be 2-6 eggs per week. However, people eat considerably more with no ill effects. Look for eggs from free-range hens which contain substantially more nutrients than their mass-produced counterparts. (37) Eggs from free-range hens contain twice the omega-3 fats of those from factory-raised hens. (38) Free-range eggs also contain one-third of the cholesterol, if this is still a concern of yours. There’s no need to pay more for brown eggs since they contain no more nutrients than white. Different color eggs simply come from different breeds of hens. (39) And whatever you do, eat whole eggs not just the whites! The yolk contains most of the nutrients your brain needs. The people of Okinawa, Japan may owe their extreme health and longevity, at least in part, to their regular consumption of sea vegetables. (76) Sea vegetables contain all 56 minerals essential for human health in a readily bioavailable form. (128, 129) Oleocanthal, an anti-inflammatory agent unique to olive oil, helps clear the brain of the beta-amyloid proteins associated with Alzheimer’s. (130) Following a Mediterranean diet high in olive oil reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s up to 40%. (131) Following the MIND diet, a slightly modified version of the Mediterranean diet, reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s by more than 50%. (135) Here in the US, class action suits have been filed against olive oil distributors Filippo Berio and Bertolli for olive oil fraud. A University of California study rocked consumer confidence when it reported that 69% of imported and 10% of California extra virgin olive oil failed to meet extra virgin quality standards. Here are a few ways to make sure your olive oil is of the highest quality: Buy extra virgin olive oil and do your homework to find a reputable brand. If possible, buy directly from a local olive oil farm or olive oil specialty store. Look for olive oil labeled Ultra Premium (UP). This is step up from extra virgin and is now recognized as the highest quality olive oil in the world. Coconut Oil For Instant Mental Energy coconut oil Coconut oil is another excellent brain food. However, in the past, it has been demonized for its high saturated fat content. In reality, people who consume coconut oil as part of their traditional diet are extremely healthy. And don’t put it in the refrigerator, it turns rock-hard. You can use coconut oil anywhere you normally use other vegetable oils, butter, or nut butters. You can cook, fry or bake with it, spread it, or add a dollop in soups, rice, or smoothies. The only caution is not to make salad dressing with it since it solidifies when the dressing is poured on cold vegetables. Note that most coconut oils taste and smell like coconut. If this puts you off, don’t give up on using coconut oil. Look for a taste-neutral coconut oil like this one. Refined coconut oil retains the benefits of MCTs that you want but with none of coconut’s distinctive taste. Buying organic is optional since coconut oil generally is pesticide-free. Fermented Foods To Nourish Your “Second Brain” fermented foods One of the weirdest and most fascinating neuroscience discoveries of recent times surrounds the microbiome, the bacteria that reside in our intestinal tract. (147) This community of microbes has a powerful and unexpected influence over our brain, causing science to refer to the gut as the “second brain” or the “backup brain.” (148) Gut bacteria make over 30 neurotransmitters including serotonin, norepinephrine, acetylcholine, dopamine, and GABA. (149) These bacteria influence your health, your mood, and even the kinds of decisions you make. Some neuroscientists are calling this discovery a paradigm shift in our understanding of the brain. Here’s how to find those that do. Look for fermented dairy products that state they contain “live and active” cultures. Get plain yogurt and add your own fruit. Added sugar in commercial yogurt feeds bad gut bacteria, nullifying some of yogurt’s beneficial effects. Avoid artificial sweeteners like Splenda. They can reduce the number of good bacteria in your intestines by 50%. (158) A few cheeses, including mozzarella and cheddar, can contain live bacteria. (159, 160) If you haven’t tried it, consider kefir. It contains a greater variety of cultures than yogurt and is well tolerated even by those who are lactose intolerant. (161) Look for sauerkraut specifically labeled raw, naturally fermented, probiotic or lacto-fermented. Don’t cook it — eat it cold or at room temperature since heat destroys the good bacteria you want. Only buy high quality, traditionally fermented miso, tempeh, and tamari. Skip supermarket soy sauce that contains sugar, artificial preservatives, and colorings — and little beneficial bacteria. Or you can get adventurous and make your own fermented foods. It’s easier than you might expect!
