By Adda Bjarnadottir, MS | 47,914 views
Broccoli is is a cruciferous vegetable, known scientifically as Brassica oleracea.
It is related to cabbage, kale, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts.
These vegetables are known for their beneficial health effects, and are sometimes referred to as the “super veggies.”
Broccoli is high in many nutrients, including fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, iron and potassium. Broccoli also contains more protein than most other vegetables.
Broccoli can be enjoyed both raw and cooked, but recent research shows that gentle steaming provides the most health benefits (1, 2).

Carbs
The carbohydrates in broccoli mainly consist of fiber and sugars.
The sugars are fructose, glucose and sucrose, with small amounts of lactose and maltose (4).
However, the total carbohydrate content is very low, with only 3.5 grams of digestible carbohydrate per cup.
Fiber
Fiber is an important part of a healthy diet.
It can promote gut health, help prevent various disease, and is linked to reduced body weight (5, 6).
1 cup of raw broccoli (91 g) provides 2.3 grams of fiber, which is about 5-10% of the recommended daily intake (7).
Bottom line: Broccoli is low in digestible carbs, but provides a decent amount of fiber. Fiber promotes gut health and may reduce the risk of various diseases.
Protein
Broccoli
Proteins are the building blocks of the body, and are needed for both growth and maintenance.
Broccoli is relatively high in protein compared to most commonly consumed vegetables (29% of its dry weight).
However, because of the high water content of broccoli, a cup of broccoli only provides 3 grams of protein.
Bottom line: Broccoli is higher in protein than most vegetables. However, because of its high water content, the amount of protein in each serving is relatively low.
Vitamins and Minerals
Broccoli contains a variety of vitamins and minerals.
The most abundant ones are listed below.
Vitamin C: An antioxidant, important for immune function and skin health (8). Half a cup of raw broccoli (45 grams) provides almost 70% of the recommended daily intake.
Vitamin K1: Broccoli contains high amounts of vitamin K1, which is important for blood clotting and may promote bone health (9, 10).
Folate (B9): Particularly important for pregnant women (11), folate is important for normal tissue growth and cell function (12).
Potassium: An essential mineral, beneficial for blood pressure control and preventing cardiovascular disease (13).
Manganese: This trace element is found in high amounts in whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables.
Iron: An essential mineral, which has many important functions in the body, such as the transport of oxygen in red blood cells.
Broccoli also contains numerous other vitamins and minerals, in smaller amounts.
In fact, it contains a little bit of almost everything we need.
Bottom line: Broccoli is high in many vitamins and minerals. These include vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, potassium, manganese and iron.
Other Plant Compounds
Broccoli is rich in various antioxidants and plant compounds, which contribute to its health benefits.
Raw Broccoli
Sulforaphane: One of the most abundant and extensively studied plant compounds in broccoli. It can have protective effects against various types of cancer (14, 15, 16).
Indole-3-carbinol: A unique nutrient found in cruciferous vegetables, which may have beneficial effects against cancer (17).
Carotenoids: Broccoli contains lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene, which may all contribute to better eye health (18).
Kaempferol: An antioxidant with many benefits for health. It may protect against heart disease, cancer, inflammation and allergy (19).
Quercetin: An antioxidant with numerous benefits, including lower blood pressure in people with high blood pressure (20).
Bottom line: Broccoli is high in many plant compounds that have been associated with health benefits. The most abundant one is called sulforaphane.
Health Benefits of Broccoli
Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli contain sulfur-containing compounds that are responsible for their often spicy and bitter taste (21).
These are bioactive compounds that may have numerous beneficial effects on health.

Cancer Prevention
Cancer is characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal cells, beyond their normal boundaries, and is often linked to oxidative stress (22).
Broccoli is loaded with compounds that are believed to have protective effects against cancer.
Observational studies suggest that consumption of cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, is linked to reduced risk of many cancers. This includes lung, colorectal, breast, prostate, pancreatic and gastric cancer (23, 24, 25, 26).
The factor that sets cruciferous vegetables apart from other vegetables, is a unique family of plant compounds called isothiocyanates.
Isothiocyanates have been shown to affect liver enzymes, reduce oxidative stress, decrease inflammation, stimulate the immune system and decrease the development and growth of cancer (27, 28, 29).
The main isothiocyanate in broccoli is sulforaphane, which acts against formation of cancer at the molecular level, such as by reducing oxidative stress (16, 30, 31).
Sulforaphane is found in 20-100 times higher amounts in young broccoli sprouts than in full-grown broccoli heads (32).
Broccoli supplements are also available in powder form, but supplemental intake may not contribute an equivalent amount of isothiocyanates, and thus may not give the same health benefits as eating whole broccoli (33, 34).
Bottom line: Broccoli contains a unique family of plant compounds called isothiocyanates, the most abundant of which is called sulforaphane. They improve many risk factors for disease, and may reduce the risk of cancer.
Lower Cholesterol Levels
Broccoli in a Bowl
Cholesterol has many important functions in the body.
For example, it is a key factor in the formation of bile acids, which are substances that help us digest fats.
Bile acids are formed in the liver, then stored in the gallbladder and released into the digestive system whenever we eat fat.
Afterwards, the bile acids are reabsorbed into the bloodstream and used again.
Substances in broccoli have the ability to bind with bile acids in the gut, increasing their excretion out of the body and preventing them from being reused (35).
This results in the synthesis of new bile acids from cholesterol, reducing the total level of cholesterol in the body.
This effect has been linked to reduced risk of heart disease and cancer (2).
According to one study, steamed broccoli is particularly effective for lowering cholesterol levels (2).
Bottom line: Broccoli may lower cholesterol levels by binding to bile acids in the gut, causing them to be expelled from the body. This reduces total cholesterol in the body.
Eye Health
Impaired eyesight is a common consequence of aging.
Two of the main carotenoids in broccoli, lutein and zeaxanthin, have been associated with decreased risk of age-related eye disorders (36, 37).
Vitamin A deficiency may cause night blindness, which can be reversed with improved vitamin A status (38).
Broccoli contains beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the body. It may therefore have beneficial effects on eyesight in individuals with a low vitamin A intake.
Bottom line: Broccoli contains several carotenoids. These are plant compounds that may improve eye health and reduce the risk of eye-related diseases.
Adverse Effects
Broccoli is usually well tolerated, and allergy is rare (39).
Thyroid Problems
Broccoli is considered a goitrogen, which means that high amounts may have harmful effects on the thyroid gland in sensitive individuals.
Cooking (high heat) can alleviate these effects (40).
Blood Thinners
Individuals who are on the drug warfarin (blood thinner) should consult with a doctor before increasing their broccoli consumption, because the high amount of vitamin K may interact with the medication (41).
Bottom line: Broccoli is usually well tolerated. It may have undesirable effects on the thyroid in some people, and those taking blood thinners should consult with a doctor before incorporating large amounts of broccoli into the diet.
Summary
Broccoli is one of the most popular vegetables in the world. It is easy to prepare, and can be eaten both raw and cooked.
It is high in many nutrients, including a family of plant compounds called isothiocyanates, which may have numerous health benefits.
It is also a decent source of fiber, and higher in protein than most other vegetables.
The consumption of broccoli has been linked with reduced risk of cancer and heart disease, as well as improved eye health.

The coconut tree (Cocos nucifera) is a member of the family Arecaceae (palm family) and the only species of the genus Cocos. The term coconut can refer to the entire coconut palm or the seed, or the fruit, which, botanically, is a drupe, not a nut. The spelling cocoanut is an archaic form of the word. The term is derived from the 16th-century Portuguese and Spanish word coco meaning "head" or "skull", from the three indentations on the coconut shell that resemble facial features.
Coconuts are known for their great versatility, as evidenced by many traditional uses, ranging from food to cosmetics. They form a regular part of the diets of many people in the tropics and subtropics. Coconuts are distinct from other fruits for their large quantity of "water", and when immature, they are known as tender-nuts or jelly-nuts and may be harvested for their potable coconut water. When mature, they still contain some water and can be used as seednuts or processed to give oil from the kernel, charcoal from the hard shell, and coir from the fibrous husk. The endosperm is initially in its nuclear phase suspended within the coconut water. As development continues, cellular layers of endosperm deposit along the walls of the coconut, becoming the edible coconut "flesh".[6] When dried, the coconut flesh is called copra. The oil and milk derived from it are commonly used in cooking and frying, as well as in soaps and cosmetics. The husks and leaves can be used as material to make a variety of products for furnishing and decorating. The coconut also has cultural and religious significance in certain societies, particularly in India, where it is used in Hindu rituals.

A Psychiatrist on Why Your Mind ‘Has a Mind of Its Own’

Your mind, as you may have noticed, often has a mind of its own: darting from task to task, debating what to eat for lunch, rehearsing memories you’d rather leave behind. If you want to have a better relationship with your mind, and not get quite so frustrated with how unwieldy it can be, it helps to have a clearer understanding of what, exactly, a mind is. Dr. Dan Siegel — clinical psychiatry professor at UCLA, founding co-director of the school’s Mindful Awareness Research Institute — has spent much of his career trying to understand that.
As he lays out in his recent book, Mind: A Journey to the Heart of Being Human, the conventional view is that your mind is what your brain does, a perspective that, to Siegel, is incomplete. To Siegel, a more holistic conception of the mind is informed by one’s subjective experience — neural activity, yes, but also physical sensations, and the vast troves of data that life gives us. Much of the project of life, and the essence of well-being, Siegel argues, is to have a well-balanced brain, a harmonious mind. Science of Us talked to him about how to do that.
Your mind is a “self-organizing process.” Kind of like a cloud.
Some of the coolest things in the world are complex systems: networks of things that interact with one another in predictable and unpredictable ways. Two of them are, according to Siegel, minds and clouds. A cloud, he says, “regulates” its own “arising”: You don’t know how it’s going to form when the winds turn or a flock of geese flies through it, but the laws of physics governing the interaction say that it will reform, arising in a new, reconfigured shape that takes into account the new inputs. “You don’t have a programmer, or a conductor — it’s just built into the nature of a complex system to have self-organization,” he says. The mind is much the same way: Sense perceptions, autobiographical memories, and bodily sensations eddy through the organism called you, and the mind arises from all that. Like a cloud, the mind is constantly regulating its psychological energy, and that’s why, he says, “the mind has a mind of its own.” If you’ve ever sat down to meditate and seen your thoughts fly by, you’ve got a very intimate case study.

Because it’s constantly arising — and leading to spontaneous, self-generated thoughts — it’s very hard to “control” what’s going through your mind. It’s better to work with the structure that the mind is arising from. To Siegel, the key is “integration,” where different aspects of your mind are developed, but also linked together. It’s an intuitive enough point: If you spend your life absorbed in thought and neglect your body, your body will suffer; similarly, if you never investigate your emotions, your emotional life is likely to get unwieldy. Cultivating your mind is like developing a city, he says: You want the individual neighborhoods to grow, but they need to be linked together by infrastructure to make the organism as a whole flourish.
Minds heal through integration.
Consider the wondrous results that University of Texas psychologist James Pennebaker has found with “expressive writing,” or journaling about emotionally intense events in your life. In the course of his research career, he’s found that when people write lucidly about their lives in that way — for just 20-minute sessions — they grow happier and lose anxiety. They have fewer doctor visits, better-functioning immune systems, and according to one study, they find new jobs faster after getting fired. To Siegel, journaling like that is a “profoundly integrative practice,” because you’re integrating linguistic processing with autobiographical memories and bodily sensations. You “put the feeling into words,” as the expression goes.
There are similar things happening in “talk” therapy, Siegel says, though a better descriptor might be relational therapy. “You’re using the relationship of trust with the therapist to allow different aspects of a person’s memory systems and emotion systems to integrate,” says Siegel, who practices psychotherapy in addition to his research work. The power of the therapist-patient relationship is that it provides the bandwidth for people to bring up and process memories or emotions or bodily sensations that would otherwise overwhelm them. “When you’re not in the relationship with a trusted therapist, it floods you,” he says. “When it’s not flooding you, you’re able to maintain it.”
In a real way, your self extends beyond the boundaries of your body.
Siegel says that our relationships help form our mind, something that personality and relationship psychologists would certainly agree with. If that is true, then a given person is much more relational and interdependent than individualism would lead you to believe. “This body you get to live in for 100 years,” he says, but if what constitutes your mind is the currents of energy that go through your person, then you are very much a part of the people you’re close to. The stakes get even higher: Writing the book changed his feeling about death, he says, because if the mind is relational by nature, your corporeal form doesn’t necessarily need to be around for you to still be present in the world. “With this broader notion of mind, you realize that you’re connected to people that were existing before your body came around,” he says, and you’ll be connected to people, through the actions you take, “after your body goes.” It sounds like a religious, even mystical, perspective — but one that, he says, you can get to purely through science.

If you have recently noticed any of the symptoms listed below, you could be suffering from impaired liver function. It is particularly important to consider these symptoms if you identify with one or more of the risk factors mentioned above.
Bloating and gas
Acid reflux and heartburn
Constipation
Skin and/or eyes that are yellowish (a symptom of jaundice)
Inability to lose weight
High blood pressure
Moodiness, anxiousness, or depression
Dark urine
Rosacea
Chronic fatigue
Excessive sweating
Bruise easily
Poor appetite
Fortunately, you can improve your liver’s functioning. Through a thorough liver cleanse, you can start to feel better in a matter of a couple of weeks. 1. Remove Toxic Foods From Your Diet
If you are eating a diet high in processed foods, you are putting the health of your liver at risk. Fried Fast Food, junk food Hydrogenated oils, refined sugar, convenience foods and lunch meats are notoriously toxic to your system.
For example, added nitrates and nitrites, commonly found in convenience foods, fast foods and lunch meats, have been linked to serious health conditions.
These chemicals are used to preserve foods to make them last longer, inhibit bacteria growth and preserve color. Replace these foods immediately with healthy choices. Healthy foods taste great, and with a bit of creativity, you can create healthful meals for your family.
Roast your own organic chicken breast and turkey breast to replace deli meats for quick lunches and after school snacks. Replace chips and other processed snacks with fresh fruit, carrot sticks, nuts and homemade granola bars.
Hydrogenated oils, also known as ‘trans fats,’ have higher levels of saturated fat. The chemical structure of the oil itself has been altered to increase shelf life. Consumption of trans fats dramatically increases the risk for heart disease by 25% or more. In addition, it is believed that trans fats cause problems with our immune system and can lead to inflammation throughout the body.
For a healthy (and tasty) alternative to kid-favorite macaroni and cheese, try my Cheesy Spaghetti Squash with Raisins and Walnuts. Spaghetti squash is low in calories, low in saturated fat, and considered a good source of Niacin, Vitamin B6, Manganese, Pantothenic Acid and is rich with Potassium. The walnuts are packed with Omega-3 fatty acids and contain anti-oxidants to boost cardiovascular health.
2. Drink Raw Vegetable Juice
It can bGreen vegetable juice smoothie e nearly impossible to eat all of the raw vegetables you need to make your liver cleanse effective. However, by juicing a variety of raw vegetables, you can easily get the 4-5 servings of fresh, organic vegetables you need. Even vegetables that aren’t your favorites can be disguised and enjoyed in a fresh vegetable juice.
With impaired liver function, juicing vegetables has the added benefit of making the vegetables easier to digest, and more readily available for absorption.
Vegetables ideal for a liver cleanse include cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. While that combination may not sound very enjoyable, you can add other vegetables that you enjoy to the mix including carrots, cucumber, beets and greens.
All of these vegetables help to reduce acid levels in the body, helping to create a more friendly pH balance. Experiment with your favorite flavor combinations; you can add fresh herbs including parsley, mint and others to make the juices more enjoyable.
Try my kid-friendly Orange Carrot Ginger Juice. Fresh, organic carrots are essential to any liver cleanse (5). In the liver, the beta-carotene is converted into Vitamin A to help flush out the toxins in the body while reducing fat in the liver.
The high fiber content helps support a healthy digestive tract, hastening the elimination of toxins in your body. The ginger root helps to soothe the digestive tract, reduce intestinal gas, and has strong anti-inflammatory compounds. The fresh oranges in this recipe not only add tangy sweetness, but also add significant Vitamin C, additional Vitamin A and Vitamin B-6.
3. Load Up On Potassium Rich Foods
Are you getting the recommended 4,700 milligrams per day of potassium? Chances are, you aren’t. Potassium-rich foods help to lower systolic blood pressure, lower cholesterol and support a healthy cardiovascular system, in addition to helping cleanse your liver. If you have been tempted to take potassium supplements, instead add these healthful foods to your diet.
Sweet raw sweet potatoes sliced Potatoes
Surprisingly, it is not the banana that is the richest in potassium. It is the sweet potato. A single medium sweet potato contains nearly 700 milligrams of potassium, not to mention the high fiber and beta-carotene content.
A sweet potato only has 131 calories, yet is rich with Vitamins B-6, C, D, magnesium and iron. While naturally sweet, the sugars actually are slowly released into the bloodstream through the liver, without causing a spike in blood sugar.
Tomato SauceTomato Sauces
Potassium, and the other beneficial nutrients in tomatoes, is significantly concentrated as a sauce, puree or as a paste. As an example, 1 cup of tomato puree contains 1065 milligrams of potassium, where 1 cup of fresh tomatoes, contains only 400 milligrams. When selecting tomato sauce, paste or puree, be sure to choose those made only from organic tomatoes.
To make your own concentrated tomato sauce, slice organic tomatoes in half and roast face down in the oven for 30 minutes at 425 degrees, until the skin has shriveled. Remove from oven, and let cool. Slide the skins off and gently crush in your food processor or blender. Strain to remove seeds, if you desire. Pour into a Dutch oven, and let simmer until thick 1 to 2 hours.
Beets and GreensBeet Greens and Spinach
Rich in anti-oxidants, beet greens contain over 1300 milligrams of potassium per cup. Add beets and beet greens to your fresh vegetable juice recipe, finely chop and add raw to salads, or sauté lightly, like other greens. Beets also naturally cleanse the gallbladder and improve bile flow. Fresh organic spinach is easily added to your diet, and is a good source of potassium, containing 840 milligrams per serving.
Different Kinds of Dried BeansBeans
White beans, kidney beans and lima beans are all rich with potassium, protein and fiber. Swap out one of these potassium rich beans for garbanzo beans in your favorite hummus recipe, and eat with carrot sticks and celery sticks.
Blackstrap MolassesBlackstrap Molasses
Just 2 teaspoons of this rich all-natural syrup contains 10% of the daily-recommended amount of potassium. In addition to potassium, blackstrap molasses is rich with iron, calcium, manganese and copper.
Incorporate blackstrap molasses into your diet by replacing other natural sweeteners with it, to create barbeque sauces, and to top oatmeal or quinoa porridge in the mornings. 2 teaspoons added to coffee intensifies the richness of the coffee, while lowering the acidic taste.
Bunch of BananasBananas
And finally, add a banana to your favorite smoothie. While in comparison to the other high potassium foods on this list, the banana’s 470 milligrams of potassium are only part of the story. Bananas assist in digestion, and help to release toxins and heavy metals from the body – all of which are essential during a liver cleanse.
Please note: If you have high levels of potassium in your kidneys, foods rich in potassium should be consumed moderately.
Cup of Coffee on green table4. Coffee Enemas
Coffee enemas help with constipation, reduce fatigue, and aid in liver detoxification. During the enema, organic coffee is retained in your bowel, allowing the fluid to enter the liver through the intestinal wall.
This has a stimulating effect that increases bile flow, helping to jump-start both your gallbladder and your liver. This sparks the production of the chemical glutathione, a strong cleansing compound that helps to release the build up of toxins in your system.
Eliminating the toxins during a liver cleanse is the most important thing, so they don’t build up and are moved quickly out of your system.
Combine 2 tablespoons of organic ground coffee with 3 cups of filtered or distilled water and bring to a boil. Simmer gently for 15 minutes and allow to cool. Strain the mixture through cheesecloth and use in your enema kit. Try to retain the mixture for 10-15 minutes, and then release.
5. Take Milk Thistle, Dandelion, and Turmeric Supplements
Milk ThistleMilk Thistle
Milk Thistle is considered the “king” of detoxifying herbs, making it ideal for a liver cleanse. Milk thistle helps to eliminate the buildup of heavy metals, prescription medications, environmental pollutants and alcohol in the liver.
In addition, it helps to reduce the negative effects on the liver after chemotherapy and radiation. The active ingredient silymarin helps to strengthen the cell walls in the liver, while supporting healthy regeneration. (6)
Turmeric BowlTurmeric
Turmeric reduces joint pain, is an effective anti-depressant, aids in digestion, helps to restore a healthy blood sugar balance, and supports healthy liver tissue and liver metabolism (7).
Currently, researchers are studying turmeric for a variety of health benefits for diseases and conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, depression, osteoarthritis, breast health, prostate health and chronic pain.
DandelionsDandelion Root
Most homeowners hate the dandelion, as it volunteers to populate yards every Spring. But, this flower, and its root, is actually packed with vitamins and minerals.
Dandelion root has a natural diuretic effect, allowing your liver to more quickly eliminate toxins. It also helps to strengthen the immune system, balance blood sugar levels, relieve heartburn, and soothe digestive upset.
6. Eat Real Liver or Take Liver Tablets
Liver from young, healthy, grass-fed cattle or chicken liver is rich with Vitamins A and B, folic acid, choline, iron, copper, zinc, chromium and CoQ10. Liver is one of the most nutrient-dense foods we can eat.
If you can’t stomach eating liver, you can take beef liver pills. Seek a supplement that guarantees no hormones, pesticides or antibiotics are used in the feeding and care of the cattle.
A Quick-Start 24-Hour Liver Cleanse
In addition to the healthy foods and supplements mentioned above, you can give your liver a boost by starting with a 24-hour cleanse. In the 7 days prior, eat kale, cabbage, lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, citrus fruits, asparagus, beets and celery. Avoid any processed foods, and eat free-range organic meats, refined carbohydrates and gluten sparingly. This preparation will help facilitate the cleanse.
Try my Secret Detox Drink during your week of preparing your body. It boosts your energy and helps you to detox and cleanse the liver. This recipe calls for apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, cinnamon and water.
Then the week of your cleanse try this liver detox drink. This recipe will help support your body while cleansing:Liver Detox Juice, Dr. Axe Recipes

Every person’s health and well-being is dependent on how their body removes and purges toxins from the body. With all the environmental pollution, toxic body care products and processed foods, most people are in desperate need of a serious detox! A liver cleanse is a great way to do this.
One of the main ways that the body rids itself of toxins is through the liver. In fact, the liver is one of the hardest working organs in the body. It works tirelessly to detoxify our blood, produce the bile needed to digest fat, break down hormones, and store essential vitamins, minerals and iron. And when the liver is not functioning optimally, we cannot digest our food properly, especially fats!
Some of the essential functions of the liver include: (1)Human Liver Anatomy Diagram
Processing nutrients absorbed by the intestines so they are more efficiently absorbed.
Regulating blood composition to balance protein, fat and sugar.
Destroying old red blood cells
Producing essential chemicals to help blood clot properly.
Breaking down and metabolizing of alcohol and medications.
Producing essential proteins and cholesterol.
Removing toxins from the blood stream including bilirubin, ammonia and others.
Storing of minerals, iron and Vitamin A.
For the liver to take care of the body, it must be able to perform optimally.
When most people think of liver disease, they think only of alcohol-induced cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is a serious health condition, but contrary to popular thought, alcoholism is not the only cause.
In fact, there are a number of factors that can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and liver damage including eating uncooked shellfish, some medications (including acetaminophen), chronic malnutrition, eating poisonous wild mushrooms, and exposure to chemicals. (2)
Cirrhosis occurs when scar tissue replaces the healthy cells in the liver. As the scar tissue continues to grow, the liver’s ability to function is diminished. Liver failure is the next biological step and occurs when the scar tissue has created so much damage, it no longer functions.

IT’S THE MOST POWERFUL ANTIOXIDANT AND IT WILL CLEANSE YOUR ARTERIES FROM LDL CHOLESTEROL
SHARE ON:
Blood levels of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) are often assessed when evaluating the risk of future heart disease.
Cholesterol is a fat substance. Fats are insoluble in water and can therefore not be transported in blood on its own.
The body’s solution to this problem is to bind cholesterol to certain proteins that function as transport vehicles carrying different types of fats such as cholesterol, triglycerides (TG) and phospholipids. These combinations of fats and protein are termed lipoproteins.
The amount of cholesterol carried in different lipoproteins can provide important information about the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD).
LDL-C is an important marker for the risk of developing heart disease.
Numerous people around the world suffer from issues linked to LDL cholesterol, which can cause heart diseases. These issues are usually treated with medicines, but we can offer you a way to solve these problems completely naturally.
Basil is a bushy annual herb, which is often grown due to the seeds and leaves. It is a potent natural antibiotic with h3 antioxidant properties, which is often considered to be the king of herbs.
Its medicinal properties have been valued since ancient times, and the high phytonutrient content provides amazing health benefits.
This herb needs warm, tropical climates. Experts claim that basil can be of more than 60 varieties, and they are all divided into three types: bush, purple and sweet.
The basil can be grown inside and outside the house. You can snip off the budding heads as soon as they appear, and to stimulate the growth of new branches, you can cut underneath the base of the leaf, close to the bottom of the spindly stems.
For best effects, you should use it while fresh, as it has a pleasant, pungent flavor. Its high vitamin K content regulates bad cholesterol and prevents blood clots.
It is also high in vitamin A, vitamin C, potent antioxidants, and beta-carotenes, which prevent the blood vessels from damage caused by free radicals. Therefore, this amazing herb prevents strokes, heart attacks, and atherosclerosis.
Basil is also a rich source of minerals, including calcium, manganese, iron, potassium, as well as DNA-protecting flavonoids.
The daily recommended dosage of this herb is 2 tablespoons of basil daily. These are the most important health benefits of the use of this impressive herb:
Natural Antibiotic
Basil is high in antimicrobial properties which make it a powerful antibiotic. All you need to do is to mix it with garlic and consume it to fight common colds and the flu.
Cleanses the Blood Vessels
This herb effectively cleanses the arteries from LDL cholesterol.
Powerful Antioxidants
Basil is high in potent antioxidants which prevent numerous health issues and protects from the damage due to carcinogens.
Basil efficiently prevents many other health issues, including diarrhea, warts, kidneys, constipation, headaches, cough, parasites, etc.

Thanks for showing us how you plant and what you add to soil. You grow a lot in your back yard, not to mention the 2lbs a day of greens you eat:)
That was a great recovery story and how you keep healthy, you don't just take prescription pills that actually kill hundreds of thousands every year. I am taking responsibility for my own heath and learning to garden and eat wild plants also as they have far more nutrients than any gardener can grow. Do you grow any "weeds" in your garden? Keeping our immune system up is a rewarding experience and one that I enjoy focusing on, most days, lol. Sorry but we don't buy any fertilizers as we 3 types of manures we add every year; sheep/cow and chicken along with composted hay and so far after 4 years the garden is doing well. But hey, if anything goes awry, I know who to call:)

Also, what is the name of the pack you bought or did you put together all of those items off of a list of options to procure?
I scrapped out the garden that was here when I bought the house and am putting in a brand new raised bed garden and want to start off right and use some of the methods you have been showing on your videos.
thanks

I have question that I've overlooked some else asking or it's never been asked. How do you enrich your soil every year at planting time without taking out some of the soil in the existing beds? I just can't figure out how you can keeping adding without overloading your raised beds! At some point wouldn't you have to take out some soil before adding more, and when you do that what should you do with what's been removed, can it still be used somewhere else? Please help this confused home gardener!

Sharon Mcanespy Hi Sharon, I don't know if John can answer this question or not (too many comments and questions) in my experience you don't remove any soil as everything is consumed by it. The only time you may remove soil when it's contaminated or you just want to replace the rocks or other hard surfaces. My beds in a year sank almost 2 inches are added with horse manure, fall leaves and wood chips. If you remove any good soil just use it in the yard or raise the level if your beds. Always mix native soil with new amendments (native soil = native bugs and microbes)
Soil leaches, washes away, consumed by plants and further breaks down over time.

I am utterly happy when I see women around the world which are aiming high, and achieving their goals. Well done. This is an interesting light story but certainly not the inspirational one, since a high number of the women which wants to achieve their goals don't have;
a.) Rich and successful parents
b.) Saved funds to cover everyday expenses (which means they need to find a job, while working parallely on their dreams)
c.) Understanding of their friends and family for their journey
d.) Strong connections in the business world (just finding an experienced mentor is a huge deal and rather difficult)
Needless to say, I'm not inspired by this. I will however, bow down to a lady such as Tererai Trent, a woman which was born and raised in Africa, without as much as a clean water and food, and today holds a PHD, and made her dream come true without any of above mentioned assets. Think you should call her for TED Talk. Especially the one for ladies.

+TheKaraqi4 to conclude, we have to agree to dissagree. You maybe collected valuable information, and if that's so, good for you. I personally haven't. We are not all inspired by the same thing, and we don't all value insights which are too general, like from my perspective this one is. I cannot compare myself to this type of person, because she has had much easier and smoother road, and even though I am glad to hear the talk of a successful young women, I was counting on the fact that this speech will "enlighten" the fact about what "needs to be done" for most of population, and it is actually tailor made just for the few lucky ones. Just my opinion.

+Ras Fiend She only had 18 minutes. She was actually spot-on, but couldn't give you any details. Our beliefs shape every aspect of our lives. If you don't believe it's possible; it isn't. We never grow in our comfort zone. Success comes when you risk much. Collaboration is key. You can get places with the help of other people that you can never get alone. Finally, you don't have to search for your purpose. It has already found you...it's that THING that you do so easily and so well, and that people come to you for because no one does it quite like YOU. Enjoy your life, my friend.

But watching a boxer in reality train will not look exciting to the average person. Can you imagine staring at a person doing 500 situps?

In essence, "making the impossible possible" means that you see a way of letting happen what everyone else says is impossible. It's not much different from what Einstein believed was possible - when almost no one else would even want to consider the possibility of it. I don't think Ingrid is some kind of fool that the TED guys mistakenly gave a forum.

This video is pointless! First of if her daddy is rich she should not be on TED giving a sermon on the art of making it! Second in order to reach out to other humans you have to have the common struggle with them/like them otherwise no one is going to listen about your daddy's connection to a Fortune 500 company blah blah blah on...last but not least this has nothing to do with women its 2016 anyone can do anything what's up with the women stuff ..?! Assuming she had another one of her daddy's connection to come on to TED and talk....I'm glad she feels accomplished good for her! It must be hard growing up in a rich family and feeling like you have to prove yourself something! She feels she made something of herself good for her.

Four tricks to avoid negativity:
Be grateful: Even for the smallest of things.
Catch yourself: Catch yourself in a complaint. Stop complaining. Congratulate yourself for being aware!
Make a new groove: We can create a brand new groove for pleasant feelings. The more often we allow our minds to remember the good stuff, the easier that kind of thinking becomes.
Practice wise effort: Wise effort is letting go of that which is not helpful and cultivating that which is skillful. How complaining physically rewires your brain to be anxious and depressed I’m pretty sure we can all pick out that one person who is a consistent negative ninny. The one person who we think sees the glass half empty, but who insists that they are just a hard-edged realist. For me, it is one of my long time childhood friends Sam. Things are never good enough for Sam and she is always the victim of something. After knowing her for about 15 years now, I’m pretty used to her negativity and I can just let it roll right off my back.
But, this is only after a lot of practice. It really used to take a lot of my energy to be around her because it was so incredibly draining. There are a couple different types of draining energies but all of them stream from one core value: Negativity.
Drain Types:
Now, I am not completely innocent of negativity. I too complain from time to time without even realizing I’m doing it. It’s pretty much a part of our culture nowadays. Dr. Robin Kowalski professor of psychology at Clemson University explains that everyone complains, at some point, at least a little. There are a few varieties when it comes to complainers. I’m sure you can stick a face to each different category.
Vent-ers: This is a very displeased person who doesn’t want to hear solutions, no matter how helpful they may be.
Sympathy Seekers: You know the type. The ones always fishing for attention with their “I’ve got it worse than you do” attitude or their constant and everything sucks demeanor. Chronic Complainers: those living in a state of complaint, do something researchers call “ruminating.” This basically means thinking and complaining about a problem again and again. Instead of feeling a release after complaining, this sort of complaining can actually make things worse. It can cause even more worry and anxiety. Ok, I’m not suggesting you give up all your bad habits and try to be a squeaky clean free-flying positive ninny. No, not even close. Bouts of negativity are normal and encouraged to reset our systems. What you want to be mindful of, is if you are being excessively negative. Why you ask? Because negativity breeds negativity.
Most of us may have been unintentionally reinforcing the nasty habit of complaining, by virtue of… complaining.
Negativity Rewires Your Brain: Donald Hebb, a neuropsychologist, believed that neurons which fire together, wire together. What he meant by that is that groups of neurons connect in our brain as a result of particular life experiences.
For instance, whenever we think a thought or have a feeling or physical sensation, thousands of neurons are triggered and they all get together to form a neural network. The brain learns to trigger the same neurons with repetitive thinking.
Basically, if you keep your mind focused on criticism, worry, and victimization, your mind will find it more easy to bring up those same thoughts for similar situations. Our thought patterns wire our brains to react positively or negatively to the situations we are presented. We get good at what we practice, so why don’t we try being a little more positive?

Breakthrough Success Depends on Your Productivity, Not Your Age

If you’re about to hit 30 or 40 or 50 or whatever, and you haven’t had your Breakthrough Success yet, don’t give up. Because according to a fancy new analysis of some 2,800 physicists — which is a hard field — your age isn’t nearly as important as your hustle.

How to (Kind of) Master Your Neuroticism
Why the Fastest Runners Are Astonishingly Chill
Published this month in Science, a research team led by Roberta Sinatra of Central European University in Budapest dug back to right around the birth of the field, 1893. The researchers collected 2,856 physicists who had 20-year careers and had published “impact papers” — the kind of research that gets cited by fellow academics and covered by the press.
The researchers wanted to see where in a career those breakthroughs were situated, and as Benedict Carey reported in the New York Times, they found that age itself wasn’t the primary driver of success. Rather, productivity ruled: The more experiments a given researcher did, the more likely they’d score a hit paper.
“[T]he highest-impact work can be, with the same probability, anywhere in the sequence of papers published by a scientist — it could be the first publication, could appear mid-career, or could be a scientist’s last publication,” Sinatra and her co-authors wrote. “This random-impact rule holds for scientists in different disciplines, with different career lengths, working in different decades, and publishing solo or with teams and whether credit is assigned uniformly or unevenly among collaborators.”
It should be noted that accomplishments did tilt toward youth, but that was because physicists, like the rest of us, have more time to work in their 20s and 30s than later, when the many responsibilities of life start to pile up.
The authors developed another factor, which they call “Q,” to explain a physicist’s likelihood to maximize the impact of their research, which takes into account soft skills like being able to work well with others, write clearly, find the most compelling results in a given experiment, and other aspects of getting things done.
The paper adds to the body of work building up around age and creativity. Harvard education theorist Howard Gardner told the Washington Post that early creative breakthroughs are likely to happen in fields where the work itself is suited to a shorter form, like math or poetry. But in law, psychoanalysis, history, or philosophy, you’ve got to spend more time marinating. “You need a much longer lead time, and so your best work is likely to occur in the latter years,” he said.
To that end, a 2011 study found that contemporary physicists make their biggest discoveries around 48, and a 2013 paper found that modern-art painters make their highest-priced work nearly two-thirds of the way through their lifespans. In Old Masters and Young Geniuses, University of Chicago economist David Galenson reasons that there are two types of artists: the experimental, who paint the same thing often, and rely on their sense perception to discover new ways of working — Paul Cézanne and his many apples and Claude Monet and his haystacks come to mind, both of whom were doing some of their most ass-kicking art well past their 60s. Then there are conceptual artists, who try to invent a new form and do lots of preparatory, deliberate sketches: They’re more given to earlier breakthroughs, like Pablo Picasso in painting or Orson Welles in film.
Sinatra’s work on physics presents a heartwarming finding: In the truest sense, your age isn’t that important — but your ability to create the time for your work, collaborate well, and make sure your results get in front of the right eyes can make all the difference.

THE CANCER DIES WHEN YOU EAT THESE 7 FOODS, TIME TO START EATING THEM
SHARE ON:
An angiogenesis inhibitor is a substance that inhibits the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). Some angiogenesis inhibitors are endogenous and a normal part of the body’s control and others are obtained exogenously through pharmaceutical drugs or diet.
We will discuss natural ways/foods that have angiogenesis inhibitors.
Research has found that these seven foods that we are presenting today are extremely beneficial in the case of cancer, as they inhibit cancer growth. What’s more, they have been shown to be even more effective than chemo in most cases.
The normal process of formation of blood vessels is called angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is more active during some periods in life, for instance, in newborns.
On the other hand, it is reduced later in life, except for some particular cases, as the restoration of tissues and capillaries in wounds. Usually, activators and inhibitor molecules are responsible for the regulation of this process.
According to the National Cancer Institute, inhibitors are generally more important, but activators of angiogenesis improve the growth of vascular cells for the formation of new blood vessels.
When they are completely developed, cancer cells normally release the angiogenesis activators due to the need of more blood vessels for nutrient supply.
Recently, modern medicine created drugs named Inhibitors of Angiogenesis. They differ from the chemotherapy, as they don’t fight tumor cells, but prevent the development of blood vessels to the tumor.
What is angiogenesis?
Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels. This process involves the migration, growth, and differentiation of endothelial cells, which line the inside wall of blood vessels.
The process of angiogenesis is controlled by chemical signals in the body. These signals can stimulate both the repair of damaged blood vessels and the formation of new blood vessels. Other chemical signals, called angiogenesis inhibitors, interfere with blood vessel formation. Normally, the stimulating and inhibiting effects of these chemical signals are balanced so that blood vessels form only when and where they are needed.
Why is angiogenesis important in cancer?
Angiogenesis plays a critical role in the growth and spread of cancer. A blood supply is necessary for tumors to grow beyond a few millimeters in size. Tumors can cause this blood supply to form by giving off chemical signals that stimulate angiogenesis. Tumors can also stimulate nearby normal cells to produce angiogenesis signaling molecules. The resulting new blood vessels “feed” growing tumors with oxygen and nutrients, allowing the cancer cells to invade nearby tissue, to move throughout the body, and to form new colonies of cancer cells, called metastases.
Because tumors cannot grow beyond a certain size or spread without a blood supply, scientists are trying to find ways to block tumor angiogenesis. They are studying natural and synthetic angiogenesis inhibitors, also called antiangiogenic agents, with the idea that these molecules will prevent or slow the growth of cancer.
The 7 foods below contain strong anti-angiogenesis properties, and they hinder the supply of the blood to the cancer cells.
Hence, scientists advise the consumption of them in order to regulate angiogenesis. In this way, you will successfully inhibit the development and spread of the malignant cells:

'It's easier to grow grapes in PH than in US, Europe'

MANILA, Philippines – While most Filipinos think that it is impossible to grow grapes in the Philippines because of its warm weather, an expert in viticulture stressed that the country is a better place for the fruit than the United States and Europe -- two places where most of the world’s wines are produced.
Unknown to many, the Philippines has been home to several vineyards, said Avelino Lomboy, who has been growing grapes in the country for more than four decades.
He said some of these are located in La Union, Cebu, Cotabato, Iloilo, Masbate and Nueva Ecija.
“In the Philippines, we have the best climate for grapes, which is 25 to 34 degrees Centigrade,” Lomboy explained. “And the temperatures the whole year round stay that way until winter. In Europe, you only grow [grapes] once a year. Here, you can grow [grapes] the whole year.”
“Grapes grow based on summer, so we have the whole year. Heat is not a problem,” he added, referring to the misconception that grapes need cold weather to grow.
Asked if Baguio is a suitable environment for grapes, Lomboy said: “No, because it’s gloomy. The grapes need sunlight. ‘Yung grapes sa Baguio are coming from La Union. Probably coming from me.”
Lomboy has been tapped to help put up the first vineyard in Tagaytay, a picturesque city that is about two hours away from Manila. The 10-hectare vineyard will be part of Twin Lakes, a real estate project of Global Estate Resorts Inc. The company is a subsidiary of the Andrew Tan-led Alliance Global Inc. which also operates Megaworld, among others.
For the vineyard, Lomboy will be working with local brandy maker Emperador and Spanish brandy house San Bruno, which are both owned by Alliance Global.

“We’re also building a chateau, which means we’ll have our own winery,” explained Harold Geronimo, Megaworld’s director for strategic marketing and communications. “We’ll be storing the grapes and we’ll age them. The company of Mr. Tan will be handling the production of the wines.”
Soil not a problem
Lomboy also reacted to questions about the Philippine soil, one of the most important things to consider when planting grapes.
“There’s no problem with the soil quality here,” he said, adding, “[and even if there is] you can condition the soil, or even replace it.”
The primary concern of viticulturists like him, Lomboy said, is the weather. This, according to him, is what gives the Philippines the edge over countries with cooler temperatures.
“In the Philippines, from planting to first harvest, it’s below one year. In America, it will take you three years. Why? Because of autumn and winter, stop ang growth. Pero ang Pilipinas, tuluy-tuloy ang growth because of the sunlight. Mas madaling mag-grow ng grapes sa Pilipinas,” he said.
First fine wines in PH?
With the project, the Andrew Tan-owned company is expected to produce the country’s first fine wines, said Geronimo, who cited the expertise of Lomboy and their Spanish partners.
“So it’s the best of both worlds, Europe and the Philippines. The Philippines with Mr. Lomboy’s expertise for more than four decades in growing grapes, plus the expertise of those growing grapes in Spain. Bring them together to produce the finest wines in the Philippines, the first finest Philippine wines,” he said.
The products of the planned vineyard – mostly wine and brandy – will be sold by Emperador.
But they are not going to do all the work: Alliance Global is also considering to sell lands to those who might want to plant their own grapes.

“We are eyeing certain lots within the area which can be used as a vineyard as well by other interested growers,” said Erwin Francis Go, Megaworld’s vice president for sales and marketing.
“So we’re not just confined to our own vineyard – we’re offering it already to others who might want to build their own vineyard here. We have pockets of available land for them to grow their own vineyard,” he added.
As for the taste of local wines, Lomboy said these are generally sweeter than the ones sold in the United States and Europe, and is expected to be a hit among Filipinos.
“Iba ang napro-produce ng tropical countries because of the heat,” he explained. “Mataas ang sugar content kaysa asim. Kaya iba ito sa Europe.”
Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay
The vineyard will be situated within a 177-hectare mixed use area, which is aptly called The Vineyard. The property will feature a low-rise hotel and three towers of condominiums labeled Merlot, Chardonnay and Shiraz -- just like the grape varieties.

The one- and two-bedroom units are priced between P7 million and P12 million each, depending on the size of the balcony, and will be ready by 2017.
Other establishments are also set to occupy the 1,149-hectare Twin Lakes, from shopping areas and restaurants to retirement homes, schools and nature parks.
